PAUL RODGERS-THE ROYAL SESSIONS-“AUTHENTIC SOUL REVIVAL” BY JOHN EMMS

Paul-Rodgers-The-Royal-Sessions

Paul Rodgers has created his own classic with his latest album The Royal Sessions.

Delving deep into Memphis Soul with the dynamics of a superb band featuring among others B-3 player Charles Hodges Sr, drummer Steve Potts, bassist Leroy Hodges Jr , guitarist Michael Toles, Archie Turner on Wurlitzer piano and The Royal Horns Rodgers has cut a very consistent recording.

From the count in on Sam & Dave’s funky I Thank You, to the complete soul revision of Burt Bacharach’s Walk On By, over to show stopping nuanced vocals on Otis Reddings’s I’ve Been Loving You Too Long and  superb takes on Albert Kings’ Down Don’t Bother Me and Ann Peebles’s I Can’t Stand The Rain Rodgers never over sings.

Producer Perry Margouleff, and mixer William Wittman have a ton of respect for the players and it shows in a warm inviting mix.

For Rodgers, his respect for the songs results in an authentic expression of emotion.

It does not get any better than this.

JOHN EMMS is a veteran music journalist, online radio host and veteran singer-songwriter with his own good time band THE SHAFTMEN  https://itunes.apple.com/ca/album/the-worlds-gone-crazy/id673101570
